A century later, the refined beauty of Rameau’s keyboard music represented the pinnacle of the French tradition. Mahan Esfahani (c) Bernhard Musil

Recital in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the death of harpsichordist Bradford Tracey on the historic "Neumeyer-Junghanns-Tracey" keyboard collection of Schloss Bad Krozingen
--

„Bach erschien so anders, so exotisch.

When Stravinsky turned to the music of the 18th century for inspiration, critics joked that he’d gone “Back to Bach”. In fact, he could hardly have done much better – because from the bustling celebration of JS Bach’s Brandenburg Concertos to the limitless energy and invention of his harpsichord concertos, music simply doesn’t get any more satisfying – or timeless – than this. and we’ve got one of the world’s most charismatic harpsichordists to play it: the one and only Mahan Esfahani. Joint Leader of the Orchestra James Clark directs with two of Stravinsky’s salutes to the Baroque era.

Appearing in his 92Y debut is Iranian-American Mahan Esfahani. Named BBC Music magazine’s 2015 Newcomer of the Year, Mr. Esfahani has traveled the globe, from Boston to Beijing, working tirelessly to prove that harpsichord is an instrument for today, not only relevant but even revolutionary.. His concerts often juxtapose early music with works that are modern (even avant-garde), prompting cheers and jeers. His 92Y recital ranges from the English Renaissance to a new version of Steve Reich’s Piano Phase, sanctioned by Reich himself.

Exploring further the paradoxical role of the artist under totalitarian rule, this concert takes its title from one of the poems of the beloved Russian poet-dissident Marina Tsvetaeva, set to music by Dmitri Shostakovich. The song cycle’s deep and rich contemplations are followed by the strikingly original works of György Ligeti, a composer who survived both Nazi and Soviet oppression. The final work on the programme is Shostakovich’s great Piano Quintet, the work that earned its composer the Stalin Prize.

Bach in counterpoint with two ultra-modern composers, here is a programme which fits the Iranian-American harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani like a glove. Indeed, he comments, it is J.S. Bach who brought him to know and appreciate all music. And the unconventional musical choices don’t stop there: as a matter of fact, to spice up Bach’s Concerto our soloist chooses a surprising cadence by Johannes Brahms.

'Bach Doubles' - solo recital
The spirit of J S Bach permeates, whether by design or by sheer osmosis, the entire course of Western music that follows his remarkable time spent on this planet. Mahan Esfahani, an artist once referred to by the BBC as a ‘harpsichord ninja’ and something of a force of nature himself, has created a programme that looks at ‘doubles’ for Bach’s works and musical language. He starts with pieces penned by Bach’s own sons before fast forwarding to the 20th century to the ecstatic patterns of Steve Reich’s ”Piano Phase” (transcribed for harpsichord with pre-recorded tape) and jazz pianist Mel Powell’s classic “Recitative and Toccata percossa”.

''Paris: The Age of Enlightenment"
Paris circa 1770: home to the brilliant philosopher, writer and chief editor of the Encyclopédie Denis Diderot – one of the most courageous advocates of a radical, godless Enlightenment. He and other like-minded intellectuals would meet at the salon of Baron d’Holbach to discuss how best to lead lives of passion and empathy, to indulge in fervent debates about opera, and to listen to chamber music – Diderot himself saw music as a direct route into people’s hearts and minds.
In this concert, historian Philipp Blom, in company with harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani and friends, will investigate Diderot’s close relationship with music, interspersing period-instrument performances of chamber works by Marais, Rebel, Rameau, Forqueray and C.P.E. Bach – compositions that resonated through his life – with readings from his letters, essays and novels.

Brinkburn Priory United Kingdom, Brinkburn Music Festival

The sound of a trumpet ringing out through the Priory Church will lend a martial air to the first concert on Saturday. Acclaimed Iranian-born harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani leads a programme which celebrates the 300th anniversary of the birth of C. P.E. Bach. We will hear his dramatic solo harpsichord sonatas, punctuated with duets for trumpet and soprano by Alessandro Scarlatti. Scarlatti’s arias, at times heroic and triumphal, capture the militarist splendour of the courts of early eighteenth-century Italy and are famous for the virtuosic vocal writing which was then in vogue.

Aldeburgh United Kingdom, Aldeburgh Festival
Solo Recital
In a solo recital at the 67th Aldeburgh Festival, Mahan Esfahani brings his trail-blazing approach and over 300 years of harpsichord repertoire rich in connections and coloured by the spirit of the dance. Underpinned by the grace and purity of early English keyboard music and Bach’s elegance and rhythmic elan, Martinu’s capricious pastiches and Bartók’s nimble, earthy cross-rhythms lead inexorably to Ligeti’s tumultuous twentieth-century keyboard inventions. Celebrated for his piano Études elsewhere this Festival, these punchy, playful fantasias exude a breathtaking bravura and instantly redefine perceptions of this gloriously versatile and oft-misunderstood instrument.

Programme:
John Bull In Nomine IX; Les Bouffons; Fantasia XII
Bach French Suite in G, BWV816
Martinu Deux Impromptus pour clavecin, H381
Gibbons Pavan in G

Mahan Esfahani harpsichord
Danny Driver fortepiano

Enjoy the music of forgotten trailblazer Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach.

The orchestra's players describe the composer and his music as 'Avant garde. Eccentric. A maniac. Wild and adventurous. Off the wall. Extraordinary.'

One of the many children of JS Bach, CPE Bach's music is bright and effervescent, and a fascinating link between the music of his father (and the Baroque era) and Joseph Haydn (the Classical Era).

How can such an unknown be considered a gamechanger? A listen to his music reveals just why. It constantly shifts, wrongfooting the listener when they least expect it with wild changes of direction and colour.

No less than eight harpsichordists perform the prize winners' and other shortlisted works from the 2012 Competition, held to commemorate the Society's Tenth Anniversary, and the first of its kind in the UK. This concert event is the culmination of an initiative which drew over ninety pieces from 18 countries. It is sure to enlighten the audience by illuminating the harpsichord as a truly contemporary instrument through a highly diverse range of pieces.

The concert is also held in memorium for Stephen Dodgson whose harpsichord music is represented in the programme.

Performers (in alphabetical order): Penelope Cave, Jane Chapman, Maggie Cole, Mahan Esfahani, Elaine Funaro, Goska Isphording, Christoph Kaufmann, Pamela Nash
