Music transports you. Tonight, Andrew Manze flies us to the forests of Finland, where the colours of the aurora borealis flicker through Sibelius’ tempestuous First Symphony. He then drops by on 18th-century Paris, where a bright young thing called Mozart is making quite a splash. And, together with Mahan Esfahani – musical explorer, and harpsichordist without limits – he creates a whole new world: the fantastic new concerto by British counter-culture icon, Gavin Bryars.

Die BrucknerBeats begeben sich in der Saison 2021/22 auf den Weg vom Brucknerhaus Linz zum Linzer Hafen. Im Juni spielt der international gefeierte Multiperkussionist Christoph Sietzen gemeinsam mit seinem Ensemble Motus Percussion Linz und Starcembalist Mahan Esfahani als Special Guest ein spektakuläres Konzert in der Container-Reparaturhalle des Linzer Hafens, bei dem sogar Blumentöpfe zum Einsatz kommen. Das Programm ist dem 100. Geburtstag des griechischen Komponisten und Architekten Iannis Xenakis gewidmet, stellt aber auch Werke zweier seiner Schüler*innen vor. Auf packende Rhythmen und mitreißende Klänge folgt eine Party mit aktueller Tanzmusik.

Mahan Esfahani, the harpsichord superstar whose Bach performances The Guardian has called “revelatory,” joins us with leading flute virtuoso Brandon Patrick George for works by J.S. and C.P.E. Bach.

The flute and harpsichord were crucial to Mendelssohn’s musical education, and though he composed no piece featuring them, these works had a clear influence on his writing. In this final mainstage concert of the festival, George and Esfahani conjure Bach’s time and share a source of Mendelssohn’s inspiration.

Harpischord virtuoso Mahan Esfahani celebrates the history and revival of the clavichord, with works by Spanish Renaissance composer Antonio Cabezon, German Baroque composer Johann Jakob Froberger, and J.S. Bach and his two eldest sons. Selections include JS Bach’s French Suite No. 2 in C Minor. Esfahani wrote eloquently about the clavichord in a New Yorker feature in 2020, noting that some believe it to have been Bach’s favorite instrument. A unique opportunity to experience the beautiful intimacy of an instrument common in Bach’s time, but rarely performed today.

Sara Levy – keyboard virtuoso, patron, student of Bach’s eldest son, great aunt of Felix Mendelssohn, and a critical J.S. Bach revivalist was at the helm of one of the most influential music salons of Enlightenment Berlin. Flutist Elizabeth Mann and harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani reconstruct the rich, inclusive musical spirit of her famed Berlin salons.

Le clavecin, un des instruments fétiches de Sarah Nemtsov, est ici mis à l’honneur. Dans une proposition en hommage à Luc Ferrari d’abord – tout premier invité des Amplitudes – mais aussi grâce à l’œuvre de la jeune et talentueuse Anahita Abbasi, chère à notre invitée.

Mahan Esfahani, claveciniste de référence à l’imposante carrière est ensuite rejoint par le NEC dont font partie pour l’occasion quelques musiciens du Moment Baroque pour présenter une pièce qui pousse le clavecin « au-delà » mais qui invoque également la nécessité de se défaire, d’aller plus loin, de laisser aller. Un temps de détachement et de rapport aux objets qui revêt sur scène également un aspect ludique.

Mahan Esfahani, weltweit als „Superstar“ und Pionier seines Instruments gefeiert, hat das Cembalo in den renommiertesten Konzertsälen der Welt neu etabliert. Neben dem Repertoire aus der Alten Musik bringt der gebürtige Iraner zeitgenössische Kompositionen sowie unbekannt gebliebene symphonische Werke auf die Bühne. George Lewis: ‘Timelike Weave’
George Lewis ist ein Vordenker experimenteller Musik und ihrer Verschränkung mit technologischen Mitteln. Schon Ende der 1980er Jahre erforschte er die Möglichkeiten interaktiver Computersysteme, die mit seinen Improvisationen an der Posaune interagierten. Seine im Jahr 1987 vorgestellte Software Voyager führt im HKW mit Magda Mayas einen improvisierten Dialog für zwei Klaviere auf und der Bach-Interpret Mahan Esfahani spielt am Cembalo die von afrodiasporischen Webtechniken wie von quantenphysikalischen Fragen gleichermaßen inspirierte Komposition Timelike Weave (2018). Mensch und Maschine, Vergangenheit und mögliche Zukünfte sowie die kulturell-technologischen Überschreibungen des einen durch das andere: Die Hauptthemen aus Lewis’ jahrzehntelangem Schaffen werden konzentriert miteinander vereint. Zuvor hält der Komponist und Professor für Komposition und Musikgeschichte eine Keynote mit dem Titel Spooky Interaction at a Distance: Telematic Afrofuturism.

As passionate as he is about expanding the harpischord’s repertoire, Esfahani’s musical life circles round Bach – ‘my favourite figure in all of history: the master of masters, the big wig in the sky’ as he described him in his recent Radio 3 series devoted to the composer.

Here he focusses on the vitality and charm of the French Dance Suites. They are preceded with music appropriate to Passiontide season; liturgical works more often heard on the organ, including Tallis’ elegant, spacious offertory on a Marian motet and Pachelbel’s variants on a chorale that was later so memorably embedded within Bach’s St Matthew Passion.

The final programme of the season, featuring our guest Artistic Director and the celebrated French specialist of baroque violin, Florence Malgoire, looks at the concept of “Aube et Crépuscule” - the dawn and dusk of the violin in pre-revolutionary France. As the violin was adopted by French musicians as a vehicle for solo expression and virtuosity, first by remarkable seventeenth century composers who combined new techniques and ideas from Italy with the sublimity of French musical expression, it founds its highest exponent in the Italian-trained Jean-Marie Leclair, the very model of the classical virtuoso.

The works of Balbastre and Mondonville are a testament to the waning of French early classicism in the years prior to the revolution, as a uniquely French style eventually gave way to the chilly Germanic winds of Enlightenment, concluding this programme and the season on a note of regret for the passing of great musical phenomena and hope for the future.

Two adventurous performers highlighted in the 2018-19 season return to 92Y to plumb the breadth and depth of the sonata repertoire for violin and harpsichord.

Stefan Jackiw makes his second consecutive appearance on the Soundspace series, joining Mahan Esfahani—last year, a soloist with the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra—for two works in the same key, by two different members of the Bach family. Interspersed are two angular entries into the 20th century harpsichord revival: a Sonata by Czech composer Viktor Kalabis—written for his wife, the noted harpsichordist Zuzana Růžičková—and a nimble Sonatina by Walter Piston.

‘Harpsichord and other Keys’
The harpsichord is not the first instrument that comes to mind when we think of progressive, contemporary music. But the mind can deceive. In the 1970s and 1980s, György Ligeti, Iannis Xenakis and Luc Ferrari composed breathtaking works for this instrument.

And new, richly-faceted pieces have also emerged in recent years, many composed for harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani, who performs worldwide. These include Intertwined Distances (2018) for harpsichord and electronics by Anahita Abbasi, which he will perform on the second concert day. Although Ligeti and Xenakis are part of the known canon, Luc Ferrari’s Programme Commun for harpsichord and tape recorder is a new discovery.

Mahan Esfahani opens the third season of his Bach Series at Wigmore Hall exploring the entirety of J.S. Bach’s output for the harpsichord. In the tenth concert of the series, he performs a varied programme comprising the two-part inventions and three-part sinfonias (c.1720), staples of the repertoire of most budding keyboard players, followed by one of the delightful French suites (c.1722-5), and an earlier but still ambitious prelude and fugue.

Britten Sinfonia
Celebrated harpsichordist and regular collaborator with Britten Sinfonia Mahan Esfahani joins principal players in the first concert of Britten Sinfonia’s annual At Lunch series. The centerpiece of the concert is Manuel de Falla’s seminal but rarely heard Concerto for Harpsichord accompanied by flute, oboe, violin, cello and clarinet; and the performance also features a scoring of Richard Strauss’s suite from Capriccio for violin, cello and harpsichord. A new work by Laurence Osborn for the same instrumentation as the De Falla will also receive its world premiere.

With dazzling technique and a refusal to bend to tradition, Mahan Esfahani has transformed the image of the harpsichord. His creative programming and commitment to commissioning new works have drawn the attention of audiences and critics alike across Europe, Asia and North America. He was the first and only harpsichordist to be a BBC New Generation Artist, a BorlettiBuitoni prize winner and a nominee for Gramophone’s Artist of the Year (not once, but three times).

Esfahani will be joined in concert by Sean Shibe, who has also spent his career rejecting clichés and overturning preconceptions whilst proving himself as one of the foremost guitarists of his generation. He was the first guitarist selected for the BBC Radio 3 New Generation Artists scheme, is the only solo guitarist to be awarded a BorlettiBuitoni Trust Fellowship and in 2018 became the first guitarist to receive the RPS Award for Young Artists.

Our Artist in Residence Mahan Esfahani loves his music, and today he pairs it with Poulenc’s delicious Concert Champêtre to form a delightfully unexpected centre to this concert with Elim Chan – a conductor who says she ‘wants to create magic’. There should be no shortage of that, either in Stravinsky’s flamboyant Symphony in Three Movements (created in Hollywood), or the fairy tale world of Ravel’s exquisite Mother Goose.

Everything old is new again! Stravinsky’s Pulcinella takes 18th-century music, sprinkles it with humour and drops it headfirst into the Roaring Twenties. Elena Kats- Chernin (remember the Lloyds TSB advert?) takes tales from the Silk Road, and creates a typically quirky showpiece for our new Artist in Residence Mahan Esfahani. Maurice Ravel, meanwhile, looks back on childhood in his ravishing Mother Goose. Guest conductor Elim Chan’s concerts are nothing if not entertaining – and she finishes this one with more Stravinsky: the high-kicking, high-voltage Symphony in Three Movements, written in 1940s Hollywood. Pure showbiz.

Johann Sebastian Bach war der Ansicht, dass Gott mit jeder Musik geehrt werden solle, andernfalls sei sie nur teuflischer Krach und Lärm. Dieses religiöse Grundverständnis lässt sich in allen seinen Kompositionen spüren, den geistlichen wie den weltlichen. Viele andere Künstler konnten allerdings der „teuflischen Versuchung“ nicht widerstehen. So etwa macht Boccherinis „La casa del diavolo“ keinen Hehl daraus, dass der Teufel mitten im Orchester sitzt. Sich der Musik ganz hinzugeben – hörend wie spielend – hat eine spirituelle Kraft. Mahan Esfahani liebt die Musik von Johann Sebastian Bach und er kombiniert sie in seinen Konzerten gerne mit zeitgenössischen Werken. »Abgesehen von Bach gibt es nichts Wertvolleres für mich«, sagt der iranisch-amerikanische Cembalist im Interview mit der englischen Musikplattform »Presto classical«. Vielleicht »brauchen die Menschen diese neuen Werke, um ihre Vorstellung von einem Instrument zu erweitern, das lange Zeit dem Spott des Mainstreams ausgeliefert war«. Schon früh hat Esfahani einen eigenen Weg gefunden, seinen leidenschaftlichen Einsatz für das Cembalo fantasievoll und weltoffen zu interpretieren. 2011 war er der erste Cembalist, der bei den Londoner Proms ein Solorecital spielte. In Innsbruck musiziert Mahan Esfahani, der soeben mit dem BBC Music Magazine Award 2017 ausgezeichnet worden ist, Barockes von Bach & Co. und kultige neue Werke von Luciano Berio und Kevin Volans.

The Brandenburg Concertos remain evergreen and present an opportunity to showcase the immense talents of many of LACO’s virtuoso principals, notably newly appointed principal flute Joachim Becerra Thomsen and newly appointed principal oboe Claire Brazeau. Als kleiner Junge von acht Jahren sah Mahan Esfahani in seinem Buch das Bild eines wohlbeleibten Mannes mit Perücke und Gehrock, der ein ungewöhnliches Musikinstrument mit zwei Manualen spielte. Es war Liebe auf den ersten Blick. „Bach erschien so anders, so exotisch. Ich hatte noch nie ein Cembalo gehört. Mein Vater lachte und sagte, es sei ein totes Instrument. Aber mich hatte es gepackt“. Eine ähnliche Bewunderung entwickelte Esfahani für Bradford Tracey, den er leider nur über Plattenaufnahmen kennen- und lieben lernte. Als den weltweit führenden Cembalisten Esfahani die Anfrage aus Bad Krozingen erreichte, anlässlich des 30. Todestages von „Braddy“ im Schloss zu konzertieren, war seine Freude sehr groß und die Zusage schnell erteilt.

'The Poet and the Tsar' (VinterFest 2017)
Exploring further the paradoxical role of the artist under totalitarian rule, this concert takes its title from one of the poems of the beloved Russian poet-dissident Marina Tsvetaeva, set to music by Dmitri Shostakovich. The song cycle’s deep and rich contemplations are followed by the strikingly original works of György Ligeti, a composer who survived both Nazi and Soviet oppression. The final work on the programme is Shostakovich’s great Piano Quintet, the work that earned its composer the Stalin Prize.

The “exhaustingly brilliant” artist (New York Times) presents a late-night ode to the ultimate keyboard composer, from beloved excerpts of Bach’s Well-tempered Clavier through a 1978 chaconne by the avant-garde composer György Ligeti.

The spirit of J S Bach permeates, whether by design or by sheer osmosis, the entire course of Western music that follows his remarkable time spent on this planet. Mahan Esfahani, an artist once referred to by the BBC as a ‘harpsichord ninja’ and something of a force of nature himself, has created a programme that looks at ‘doubles’ for Bach’s works and musical language. Paris circa 1770: home to the brilliant philosopher, writer and chief editor of the Encyclopédie Denis Diderot ­– one of the most courageous advocates of a radical, godless Enlightenment. He and other like-minded intellectuals would meet at the salon of Baron d’Holbach to discuss how best to lead lives of passion and empathy, to indulge in fervent debates about opera, and to listen to chamber music – Diderot himself saw music as a direct route into people’s hearts and minds.
In this concert, historian Philipp Blom, in company with harpsichordist Mahan Esfahani and friends, will investigate Diderot’s close relationship with music, interspersing period-instrument performances of chamber works by Marais, Rebel, Rameau, Forqueray and C.P.E. Bach – compositions that resonated through his life – with readings from his letters, essays and novels.

Last year, I had the pleasure of serving on the jury for the British Harpsichord Society's Composition Competition, judging hundreds of compositions for harpsichord sent from young composers all over the world.

Finals Showcase Concert of the British Harpsichord Society's International Composition Competition

No less than eight harpsichordists perform the prize winners' and other shortlisted works from the 2012 Competition, held to commemorate the Society's Tenth Anniversary, and the first of its kind in the UK. This concert event is the culmination of an initiative which drew over ninety pieces from 18 countries. It is sure to enlighten the audience by illuminating the harpsichord as a truly contemporary instrument through a highly diverse range of pieces.

The concert is also held in memorium for Stephen Dodgson whose harpsichord music is represented in the programme.
